By Chap. (Capt.) D. Craig Bickel Special to GUIDON Winston Churchill once said: “There is nothing wrong with change, if it is in the right direction.”
The move from 2009 to 2010 brings changes. For some of us, we are ready to move past 2009, leaving it in our rearview mirror without looking back. For others, the changes that 2010 brings seem scary or worrisome. Whether we look forward to the changes of 2010 or dread them, change will come. How we face those changes can make all the difference for us and those we love. A few days ago I was talking with my daughter, Sharla. She was upset. Three teachers had asked her to be involved with three different school activities. She couldn’t say yes to all of them, but she didn’t want to disappoint anyone either. We talked together, and sorted out the one she should choose, and to say “no” to the others. Sharla was facing changes. At first she was overwhelmed, but later she realized that she had three good options to choose from and that her parents supported her. As you face changes in 2010, whether good or bad, difficult or enjoyable, look for others who will walk alongside you. Also never forget God’s presence. Psalm 32:8 says, “I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go; I will counsel you and watch over you.” May the changes of 2010 indeed lead you, “in the right direction.” (Editor’s note: Bickel is the 554th Engineer Battalion chaplain.) |
